Directed by Patrick Bossé, the immersive film Lands of the Americas revisits the sixty-year practice of multidisciplinary artist René Derouin.
In the manner of an artistic and virtual travel diary, the film takes the road to the key places of his path and his inspirations from Quebec to Mexico, Japan and the great Canadian North. During the total immersion in his favorite landscapes and in his fascinating creative process, the artist reveals the intimate links between his approach and his quest for identity.
To embody his rich journey as a Métis of the Americas, he creates an original large circular work in front of the camera, in perfect harmony with the form of the film. In forty-five minutes, Territoires des Amériques offers a unique journey into the fascinating universe of a prolific and internationally recognized artist.
Lands of the Americas premiered in the dome of the Société des arts technologiques in Montreal in June 2021. The immersive film then took off across the province.
Several museums in Quebec have joined our journey: the Statera in Sorel-Tracy, the municipality of Mont-Tremblant, the Rouyn-Noranda art museum, the Baie-Saint-Paul contemporary art museum, the Val-David exhibition center, the Joliette art museum and finally the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec.
Other places of diffusion are also interested in the event: The city of Saguenay, Destination Gaspé, Axart in Drummondville, the municipality of Repentigny, the regional museum of Rimouski and finally La Maison autochtone.
The initiative of this tour has two main objectives:
One, to promote and disseminate a revisited work of an important visual artist from Quebec through the eyes of an artist of the digital age.
And two, to introduce the populations of the regions to the digital works in dome which, according to us, is the future of modern cinema. Lands of the Americas is the ideal film to promote such a movement since it breaks with the preconceived notions that people may have about the nature of domed films, either scientific or space films. It is true that many domed films are scientific in nature, however, we are now seeing a diversification of content. Lands of the Americas is a perfect example of this, as it is a unifying film about the art and history of an artist with an unconventional background.
The Lands of the Americas tour is the first dome tour of a 360 film through museum institutions in Quebec and around the world. It is a brand new concept that we have developed and it is appreciated by artists, institutions and the public.
The innovation of this project can be described by this world first film tour in our state of the art mobile geodesic dome, but also by the dome film itself since it is a first in the industry that a dome film presents the work of an artist. This world premiere opens up a world of new possibilities and demonstrates what 360 works can achieve.
